A difficult game to call given the really hard and bobbly pitch condition.
Competitive, and often feisty, the rivalry between the two sets of players was evident, and no quarter was being given as the first half unfolded.
The home side enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, and a the first chances unfolded in front of the Church goal. On 8 minutes Barnett moves the ball on quickly in the centre circle, releasing the lively Verma out wide left, and the Stourbridge man takes the ball on before forcing Hollingshead into a fine save, palming the angled shot away for a corner.
The Glassboys continue to press in the attacking third, and a cross by Kirton is met by a flicked headed effort from Rowe, but the ball is slightly too high and the header glances just wide.
Church are moving the ball forward but without an opening particularly happening, and it was not until the 19th minute that there was any glimpse of a real threat on the home goal. Sweeney holds the ball up on the edge of the box, and under pressure feeds it off to Willis, with the Church midfielder connecting well with a curled shot, but it is the wrong side of the post, hitting the side netting just outside the left hand post.
The breakthrough came on 32 minutes when a far post corner was turned in from close range by former Church man Tyrone Barnett. The goal was hotly disputed by the Church defence, especially Ethan Sephton who was cautioned as a result, as there seemed to be a clear claim for a foul as a defender appeared to be wrestled to the ground to facilitate his finish.
Church are probably struggling a bit at this point, and Crowther gives away an unnecessary corner just after with an errant back pass, and another ball to the far post and Hollingshead is forced to tip the ball over his own bar.
Church find their feet a little at the beginning of the second half, and enjoy their best spell of the game with a period of more sustained pressure.
But there is no breakthrough, and the action then switches to the other end with Hollingshead having to save smartly again at his near post. On 69 it is the Church keeper in action again. He is at full stretch to palm away a close range headed effort from Barnett to potentially keep his side in the match,
The niggly nature of the game spills over with a few minutes remaining as the referee spots an off the ball incident across the width of the pitch, and quickly brandishes Glassboys' Rowe a straight red card. He is inevitably surrounded by red and white shirts, and is somehow persuaded to add to his decision, and after a lengthy discussion with his assistant, who was also more than 50 yards away, decides to give a second red, to Church's Dan Sweeney, to even things up. Who really knows what the thinking process was, but it did not look as if the officials really knew what was going on.
