CHURCH BOUNCE BACK TO EDGE THRILLER...

CHURCH BOUNCE BACK TO EDGE THRILLER...

Paul Hasker19 Apr - 21:06

Alvechurch U18 BA win a seven-goal contest to return to winning ways.

It was make or break in the league now for Alvechurch. They know the task, they have to win every game from now until the end of the season to keep their faint title hopes alive. Having been on a run of no win in their last five league outings, dating back to the end of January, it was vital that they start to finish the season a more sweeter note and soften the blow of letting their lead at the summit slip away from them. A really good start to the campaign now starting to falter and crash, but a chance to put things right.

HOW IT UNFOLDED:
On a rather chilly night at The Hayes, it was the visitors to get us underway and it was Pershore Town, who started the contest the brighter of the two teams. A knock in confidence made for a nervy start for the home team. The first shot of the encounter came from 30 yards out which was calmly taken into Connor Howe's grasp.

But on the eighth minute mark, it was Church to break the deadlock. Having clipped the ball into the channel, it allowed Louie Clifford to race onto it. He got there ahead of the goalkeeper who found himself stranded in no man's land, but forced Clifford to come out of the box and wait for support to arrive. The tricky midfielder then laid the ball off to Taylor Mason, he skipped past two Town challenges. The striker reached the by-line before drilling the ball hard and low into a dangerous area, in which the away defender could only divert into his own net.

Having just opened the scoring, Church nearly shot themselves in the foot 30 seconds from the restart. The ball was laid back to the captain, who drove with the ball into our half before slipping his team-mate in on goal. The angle was always against his partner, but the effort was aimed towards the far corner, and Howe had to get down to make an important stop.

The game was really starting to open up so early on. A front-to-back contest from both sides. This time, it was Church' chance to attack. Will Hicks took the ball into his stride before picking out Josh Harwood, who took the ball under control and unleashed an effort from the edge of the box but couldn't generate the power needed to beat the goalkeeper.

It really should have been two on 12 minutes. Harrison Dodd on the left-hand flank opted to deliver the ball early, and it was on a plate for Hicks to come onto and volley towards goal. Hicks' connection was superb but he could only hit it straight at the goalkeeper from 9 yards out before Town recovered to clear the rest of the danger.

The pressure was starting to build on an out-of-form Pershore side, who couldn't get out of their own half. Allcott's side thought they had their second goal on 29 minutes. A short corner was played quickly, Mason opted to strike from the corner of the 18 yard box, the keeper saw it late but made a strong save. Dillon Knight tapped in the rebound - however, saw the offside flag raised to deny us a second.

There was a sucker-punch to come right on the stroke of the half-time whistle though. Church cleared the ball out to the right-hand channel. The wing-back took one touch to control before crossing it into the area, the cross dipped and swerved, causing Howe a huge problem. The ball landed in the far corner, a cross-cum shot, and a bit of fortune about it too. Pershore were level from nowhere. Then came the half-time whistle as we kicked off again...

HT: ALVECHURCH 1-1 PERSHORE TOWN

An absolute kick in the teeth for the home side, who didn't deserve to be level at the interval.

The equaliser didn't seem to bother the motivated home group of players as they went about their business again in the right way. They found their second goal just minutes into the second period. Tom Mawdsley won the ball back as the visitors looked to break out, he fed it to Mason, who rolled three tackles, drove into the box and drilled a wonderful effort across goal, arrowing it into the bottom far left-hand corner to restore the lead.

Having now got their noses back in-front, they were searching for a killer third goal to all-but wrap up the points on home turf. Although, they went in search of that, they found themselves back on level terms just six minutes later. Guilty of giving away a free-kick 35 yards from goal, it seemed impossible that the defender was going to shoot. But, we were dead wrong about that. The defender did in-fact let fly from that far out and it nestled into the top right-hand corner - no goalkeeper in the world stops that. A stunning strike brought the away side level.

Another setback for the Church lads to deal with, would they be able to recover this time though?

Their character and resilience being tested to the fullest now. They've had some real challenges over their last five league games and the one thing they've lacked is the edge to go again, now they really needed it. Time ebbing and ticking away from them, it was vital that they didn't feel sorry for themselves and shy away from the task. The travelling team not going quietly, out to shock one of the top four teams again.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!

The home side summoned their powers of recovery again to snatch their lead back. A wonderfully floated ball into the area from Mawdsley fell to the back post. Joseph Hemming got his head to the ball at the far stick, planting it back into a really dangerous area, the perfect place for a striker to be. Mason was waiting on the spot, and he headed it over the line from 3 yards out to give us the advantage. Church 3, Pershore 2. Could we hold on this time?!

There was to be more goals in this topsy, turvy encounter though!!!

Alvechurch settled the nerves with about 15 minutes left on the clock as they grabbed an important fourth goal. Substitute Joseph Kwarteng entered the fray. The dancing feet of our winger was pivotal to this goal, too! The goal of the night arrived our way. Kwarteng held out of the area in the right-hand channel before gliding past three tackles, nutmegging his marker and curled home from the tightest of angles to make sure of the three points. An absolutely unbelievable goal from Joseph.

The visiting team weren't letting go off the game though as they set up a grand-stand finale. Three minutes of added time, they had the ball in the net. A corner was whipped in from the left, and the ball landed right on the head of their towering midfielder, who powered home the header from close range to make it a nervy ending to the game. But, the soldiers saw it out to claim a massive win to reignite their campaign.
